Our Jubilee lesson was on Samplers.  We had quite a collection among us.  It was fun to share. We had lunch, and I got out the old tablecloths that had been embroidered by my grandmother, and great grandmother.  The awards were Dottie Allred and La Don Forsgreen 5 year pins, and Kathlyn Murie 25 year pin

DUP Christmas Party

Our DUP Christmas Party was held in Ellen's lovely Home.  We honored Jayne McCook as our Pioneer Woman of Today . We also had a successful Service Project for the shelter for women recently released from prison. We catered the food from Corner Bakery.  I know we played the fun game that has since become a tradition that Janice Peterson came up with.  Lots of Laughs.  I shared Brads wood working Nativity's and how he feels about making them. Each of the daughters got an ornament that he made .

Boy, am I bad about getting pictures.  I realized that at the end, and took pictures of the food.
One of the fun activities we did was get on the computer and find out who was related to who. Laura did such a good job of getting the ladies to particulate. The membership pins were 5 year Marilyn Larsen, 10 year Marlene Anderson,Tracy Teters, Michelle Mahlstede, Lynn Van Vuskirk and Wanda Wach.  We played a speed friend shipping game which was a lot of fun. A memory game with great prizes. We wee all encouraged to write out own history.

We always have so much fun at our Jubilee.  This year we welcomed a new member, and Honored Becky Franklin as our Pioneer Woman of Today. Ellen gave an interesting lesson using some interesting pioneer artifacts.  The center pieces were pioneer "Goody" cans. They were filled with recipes, games, a handkerchief doll, and my son Brad made a whirligig toy for each of the cans. They are so much fun to play with. As always the food was great, and we had lots of fun visiting .

Daughters of Utah Pioneers District Convention

So many people to say thank you to.  So many little miracles happened.  I missed Janice Peterson and her proof reading skills this year. I made a major mistake on the invitation.  The Address Was Wrong!  Thanks to Pasty, who wanted to make sure she knew where she would be going, scouted out the destination ahead of time, and after spending hours and not being able to find it, alerted Becky Franklin, who alerted me!  It gave me just enough time to call the other Company Presidents, those coming  from Victorville, San Bernardino and Riverside, AND our visitor from Utah, to let them know of the mistake! That would have been a disaster of gigantic proportions. Thank you Patsy.

Cula’s brother passed away, so she was on her way to Utah,  and she had the music copies, they didn’t make it to Laura, who volunteered to lead the music for us. Laura thought things through, and ran off some more. Thank you Laura.

I figured I could make the cupcakes, remember we thought that maybe we would have 35 people! I had cleared my calendar the week of the convention to be able to get all the details finished.  I am glad I did, my 5 month old grandson ended up in PICU at CHOC hospital for that entire week.  I had the 4 year old and 2 year old brothers, so Dereks parents could be at the hospital.  I can’t get anything done except love and play with those little boys, who were having trouble understanding why mom had to stay at the hospital with baby Derek, and why they couldn’t come home.   So extra thanks to Sarah, Becky and Laura who stepped in and took care of that.

Now a big thanks to all the things that went smoothly!

 Lonna, really came through with the building, she was there early, stayed late, and arranged for missionary help, and most important stopped the basketball players from coming in.

Our two future DUPers.  Aubry and Haley, the music was so sweet, you looked adorable, your moms and grandmothers were so proud.  Thank you so much.  We will be requesting your talents again. Thank you, Kim and Amy for coordinating, and Jenny for her beautiful accompaniment .

Kim and Trudy, the tables looked amazing.  Lots of comments about the lovely centerpieces.  The favors were so pretty.  Lots of hours went into those, and they were a hit! What a special talent you have Trudy.

Jayne lent us her tablecloths, the black and yellow worked beautifully. Thanks Jayne, we will use some of them again at Jubilee.

Amy, thanks for your help in the bookstore.  I didn’t realize what a job that was!  Ellen Jeppson was pleased with the sales.

Pat, thanks for collecting the money, you don’t get to visit with people, and your shopping time was short, so thanks for stepping in for Janice.

Thanks to my husband, who was the official priesthood leader, he was swamped with work, but thanks to wireless internet he was able to “get er done”.

And thanks to all who came, when our company stood up for roll call, there were people I didn’t recognize.  I hope to see you all at Jubilee.  I need a company photographer, Becky, could you share the pictures you took of the girls singing?

Kim sent her recipe for that wonderful Salad.

Craisins Salad by Kim Koyle

1 head red leaf lettuce

1 head green leaf lettuce

1 head iceberg lettuce

1 (8 oz.) package shredded mozzarella cheese

1 (8 oz.) package shredded Parmesan cheese

1 pound bacon, cooked and crumbled

1 (8 oz.) package Craisins

1 c. sliced almonds, toasted

Break red and green leaf lettuce into pieces.  Chop iceberg lettuce.  Toss together with the other ingredients except the bacon.  (I heat bacon just prior to serving to release the yummy flavor.)  Add bacon and toss.

Craisins Salad Dressing

½ c. red wine vinegar

1 c. sugar

½ onion, chopped

1 ½ t. salt

2 t. mustard

1 c. canola oil

In blender mix all ingredients, except oil.  Add oil and blend again.

Either pass the dressing around with the salad or toss with the salad.

Euclid Camp Opening Social

Euclid Camp had an amazing opening social. Lori Lakey, a friend of Trudy Hooper's, presented an informative and fun presentation on vintage clothing.  It ranged from pioneer times to clothes from the 50's.  We learned a lot about underclothing from the 1800's. We were all grateful we didn't live during those times, even though the clothes were beautiful.  We had a delicious lunch. The table settings were lovely, with scattered old pictures on the tables, I think we all wished we would come upon a long lost picture of one of our ancestors.  I am not sure who all to acknowledge for all the hard work.  I know Lonna, Trudy, Kim and Debi were all involved, and a big thank you to Lori Lakey for the presentation, and the use of her lovely home.  Have we recruited her into the DUP Camp?

Pioneer Doll Fun

I had so much fun with my granddaughters as a result of our Jubilee.  I borrowed the DVD, and showed it to my granddaughters.  We then got into the fabric "leavins" of their Great Grandmothers fabric stash, and they picked out fabric pieces ( some of which were leftovers from clothes my mom made me). the bodies were left over fabric from my wedding tablecloths. I got out the button jar that was my mom's ( don't tell my sisters I have it.)and they picked eyes.  It was a great second sewing project.  They learned how to go around a curve, clip curves, and sew buttons on, thread a real needle. ( not a yarn one like we have been using).  The littlest one took a nap with hers.  What special memories we made that day.

Our Fabulous Jubilee

 We had such a fun Jubilee.  Euclid Camp was in charge of the decorations, and they went "all out".  That is a direct quote from their captain Lonna  Butts. Associate member Debi Blocker, and Daughter Trudy Hooper were in charge.  It felt like we walked into a Lavender Garden.  The dipped strawberries even had Lavender chocolate.  The wonderful food was provided by the Indian Hill company.  Becky Franklin and Ann La Londe took care of that.  It was delicious.  Valley Ranchero was in charge of the program, and Laura Haskell did an amazing job of teaching all of us how to make the cute little pioneer dolls.  It will be fun to hear the stories of how the daughters did this with their children and grandchildren.  I am excited that many of our daughters are working on their own histories.  Thank you Dottie and Jayne for sharing and inspiring us.

 The Outstanding Service Award was presented to Cula Farnsworth who is from the Valley Ranchero Camp.

My mother is a marvelous example of a “joyful life.” 

 

She was born of “goodly parents”, giving her a magnificent foundation for Life.  She is a source of love and compassion, allowing her to be “in tune” to those who need a phone call or a friend.  She always gives unconditional love, whether the person’s choices are gospel-oriented or not.

 

She has raised four daughters and a granddaughter in righteousness.  All five of us know she is our biggest cheerleader, and that family is everything to her.  We continually come to her for cheer, comfort and happiness. 

 

Life has not always kept her in Heavenly Father’s safe embrace.  Despite constant faithfulness, she has experienced astonishingly heartbreaking trials.  Through it all, she always held to the “Iron Rod”, remaining stalwart and steadfast.  Even when her world was falling apart, she would put her sorrows aside and gladly serve others who were also in distress.  She has found “great delight and happiness” no matter the circumstance.  Many who know her have been touched by her genuine spirit.  She has faced the Lion of Adversity head-on many times, and never cowered.  Rather, she always looks it head-on and dares it to devour her!  It never has.

 

Cula is the stake that holds the tent of our family together.  Her kindness, unselfishness, and strong testimony make her an inspiring example.  No one doubts her sincerity and love.  Even through difficulties, she has always been a woman whom many could call blessed.  Her trials have been great, yet through it all, she has found joy in living and teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  She has brought that joy into the lives of those close to her.  I am grateful to be her daughter, and could not ask for more in a mother.

 I know that Cula was a Relief Society President.  She has been such a faithful member of Daughter of Utah Pioneer, traveling almost 2 hours to come to our meetings.  She served a full time mission in Hawaii.  She is so loving and kind and so tender hearted.  This year she and her daughter, Jenn, served on the Time out for Women committee.

 Trudy Hooper received the Pioneer Woman of Today. Her two daughters were in attendance at the meeting. This is what was said about Trudy.

Trudy Hooper was born June 25, 1946 to Durant and Dorthella Wadsworth.  She was the second of five children.  Trudy was a military brat and grew up all over the United States and spent most of her formative years in Wurzburg, Germany.

Trudy married Jim Hooper in January of 1966.  They have four children. Kim Koyle of Alta Loma, CA, Kristi Matheson of Murrieta, CA, Brent Hooper of Alta Loma, CA and Brian Hooper of San Antonio, TX. Trudy and Jim resided in Ontario, CA until Jim’s death in 1995.  This was very unexpected and left Trudy a widow at the age of 49.  Trudy has 12 grandchildren.

Trudy has been a Relief Society President, Stake Primary President, temple worker, Family History Center Director, member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and Relief Society Teacher.  Those who know Trudy love to listen to her teach.   She has a powerful testimony and radiates the light of Christ to those around her.  She continues to serve in the community by teaching monthly card classes at an assisted living facility.

Every summer Trudy hosts “Grandma’s Camp” which is a weekend trip for all the grandkids to grandma’s house.  She always has a cute theme and lots of fun activities to go along with the theme.  The grandkids all look forward to this annual event all year long.   

Anyone who knows Trudy knows that she collects Nativity scenes. She has collected sets from all over the world.  She enjoys displaying them in her home as well as the Creche Festival that Upland Stake hosts each year.

Welcome New Members

Eculid Camp welcomed 2 new members at their last meeting.  Jennifer and Kim, Marlene was there to present their certificates. She even had her camera with her.  She discovered that she had put the Sim card back wrong, so the picture did not turn out.  We will try again, or maybe Lonna could email me the picture she took.  So sorry.  
On another happy note.  Sarah Wolfe, of the Indian Hills Camp,  gave birth to a healthy baby boy last week.  Congratulations!

Jubilee is Coming Soon

Daughters, our Jubilee is coming in May.  We have a new location.  It will be held at the Sapphire Building in Upland. It is just off the 210 freeway near the Colonies.  Valley Ranchero Camp has a fun program planned that has to do with Pioneer Dolls, you are not going to want to miss it.  The food will be great, and the decorations beautiful.  Put it on your calendar now.

Euclid Camp Opening Social

It was so much fun to attend the Opening Socials of each of the camps.  I can't believe I didn't take pictures at Indian Hills, or Valley Rancheros.  The menu's, and activities may be different, but the spirit of DUP is always present when the daughters get together.

DUP Christmas Party

Our first annual DUP Company Christmas Party was held in Ellen's beautiful home in Claremont.
As always, when the daughters get together we have fun.  Ann La Lond gave a fun lesson that had us all laughing.  The company officers, Marlene, Janice Becky, Lisa and Bonnie provided and served the luncheon.  We had sandwiches and salads and Ice Cream cookies for dessert.  An applesauce, cinnamon heart ornament was given to each daughter as a remembrance.
Our service project was to provide gifts and gently used clothes and jewelry for a halfway house for women.  the daughters were so generous. The contributions filled up the space under the stairs, and part way up the stair case.

Give any donations to your captain if you are not.

Training Meeting

It is always fun when a group of daughters gets together.  We do a lot of laughing. All the camps were represented, there were a lot of agenda items, but we got through them in just over an hour! Yea!
Dinner was Taco Salad in a Bag, more appropriate for children, but something different. I will get out Grandmas DUP plates next time.
The Camp officers have the information about upcoming events.  We are really looking forward to the Company Service Project ( We are joining Indian Hills Camp for this)  We will be taking things for a Women's half way house for former prisoners.  Gently used clothes, jewelery, shoes, cosmetics and the like, put in a gift bag, (they don't want wrapped packages) are the donations needed.  So start now collecting and putting aside things for this project.  We will meet at Ellen's lovely home Dec 12, 10:30 am, and bring the things together, and have brunch.  Calendar this fun event now.

We would like to see each camp post something at least 3 times during the year on the blog!  That way we know what the other camps are doing.   If you are having a special speaker at one of your camp meetings, be sure and use the Email to send the information to the other camps.

Jubilee Part 2

We are so pleased to honor these wonderful Daughters at our Jubilee. Their stories were amazing, the following is just a summary of what was read at our Jubilee.

We are going to miss Ruth Anns beautiful smile.

We honored Ruth Ann as a Pioneer Women of Today. Ruth Ann was born in 1923, she met her husband Armand Gunderson when she was playing softball and he was the pitching coach. He had a professional softball career that took them all over the country.  Ruth Ann worked for May Company and Bank of America She and Armand were married for 43 years before he died.  They had 2 daughters, 2 sons, and a daughter who passed away at age 3.11 grandchildren and 24 great grand children.  She later married Glen Wheeler, they served a mission in the Denver south area.  They were married for 14 years.  The people in her ward would call her Sis. Gunder Wheel. Ruth Ann served in the Presidency of the Relief Society, Primary and Young Women.  She did artistic work for the Yellow Pages, and colorized black and white photos. She played the Organ, and sang in many church and community choirs. Ruth Ann always looked lovely and was stylishly put together. She had some rules she always followed. She did not leave her room until 1. her bed is made. 2. she has showered and 3. has her make upon and has done her hair. she never colored her hair. She never went to bed with dishes in the sink. Ruth Ann is a third generation DUP. She has served as Company and Camp president and other positions.

 

Sue Kern is a member of the Valley Ranchero Camp. When you think of service, Sue's name is what comes up. She headed a very successful Stake Humanitarian Program where hundreds of handmade, balls, bears, dolls, blankets, knitted hats, puppets, ABC books and quilts of all sizes were donated to the LDS Church Humanitarian Center. Sue is also a member of the DAR where she conceived the idea and has carried out a program called Project Patriot, they collect supplies to send to the troops overseas, they made neck coolers and helmet liners, and lap blankets for the VA Hospital. Part of Project Patriot is gathering supplies and materials to set up schools for Afghan girls. She also heads up the fundraising program that raises the money to pay for the sending of these materials overseas.  One of the most successful fundraiser was a Jewelry Sale, she convinced the DAR ladies to donate their unused jewelry, she then displayed it beautifully, and the other DAR ladies purchased it!

Audra Olesom was born in Idaho, in the year 1916. She grew up during the depression, on a farm as one of 11 children. Their transportation was a horse drawn buggy and bob sled.   She married Alvin Schwendiman in 1937, in Salt Lake Temple; they had two daughters Carol Jean and Lorraine.  After Alvin obtained his PhD they moved to Bozeman Montana where he taught.  Soon Alvin became ill, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, and after struggling for 2 years Alvin died in 1946, leaving Audra with 2 little girls to raise.  She faced her trials with Faith and Courage, took her family to Logan Utah, enrolled at Utah State, got her teaching credential and taught in the Logan city schools for 8 years. She married Roy Oleson in 1958, they moved to Claremont and she continued to teach until 1983, a total of 33 years. She has been involved in DUP as a charter member of the Indian Hills Camp. and served on the board.  She lives in her home, determined to be as independent as possible. Her life has been an example of Faith and Fortitude.

Lorraine Schwendiman Pierce has 6 children, attended BYU, and was a Charter member of the Indian Hills DUP Camp. She has served in many different positions most recently as Secretary Treasurer.  She is known for her friendship and compassion and selfless service not only to her mother, but her friends also.  She is considered a great blessing to those whose lives she has touched. We are so pleased to honor these two lovely women as Pioneer Women of Faith and Fortitude.

Inland Empire Jubilee

 I don't know why I can't get these in the order I would like.  I am still learning. We installed the new Camp Officers.  Euclid and Valley Ranchero have new boards, and Indian Hills has returning officers. It is fun to watch the excitement for a new year.  As a point of interest, next year will be the 25th year anniversary for the beginning of the Inland Empire Company. Happy Anniversary to us.

 We had a special musical number by a very talented family of children.  There is nothing sweeter than children singing pioneer songs.  The decorations included some pioneer histories and pictures from ancestors of the Valley Ranchero Camp. The room look lovely.

We had daughters reach milestone numbers in their membership in the DUP.  We were pleased to be able to honor each one, and thank them for their participation and service to each of our camps.  Valley Ranchero camp not represented, that camp has been around 8 years.  We are looking forward to honoring their charter members in a couple of years.
